THE DOCTOR IS IN! 16 years since Dre has released an album, and hip/hop has been missing him. For his third album Compton he recruits a few artist to feature on his Grand finale album. The artist that stands out most on this album is Kendrick Lamar; King Kendrick has been crushing every track he’s jumping on. This album is a great Dre album but there are a few issues I have on this album, but first lets go over the three favorite tracks part. My three favorite tracks off this album are ” Darkside/Gone”, “Deep Water”, and “Talk about it”. There are a lot of songs on here that I love so this was really hard to just pick three. The only songs I didn’t like are “One Shot, Two Shot”, and “Satisfaction”.
“Darkside/Gone” I love this song for two reasons; first reason the beat switch up on this track is great. The first beat that starts the song is crazy good and gets you pumped. After Dre does his verse on this track where it bleeds into another beat so fluidly with an Eazy-E sample. I loved this second verse on this track as well because it sounded so perfect alongside the piano on this track. The second reason I loved this track was because Kendrick was on it and he just hopped on the track and gave a verse that was so good it fit perfect again with the beat.
“Deep Water” This song was great because I loved the sound effects they used at the beginning of the track and throughout the track. As well I loved the verses Dre added to this track, because it sounded like Old Dre and that’s what had me nodding my head to the beat. As well Kendrick comes out of nowhere and adds a verse that had my head spinning with how fast and fluid it sounded. If they had Eminem on this track too I think it would have been easily the best song on the album.
“Talk About it” I loved this song because it connected so well with the intro and it just gets you pumped up. As soon as it comes on I can’t help myself and just scream alongside the lyric ” I don’t give an F**K!”. It just feels so good driving around bumping this song. I love how Dre comes into this track with the lyric ” I…Just…. Bought…Cali….Fornia!” When I heard that I just said “Daaaaaaaamn!”.
This album is great and there’s no questioning that. But it is not with out some flaws; there are way too many features in my honest opinion. I wanted to hear more of Dre on the tracks and not all the people he recruited for this album. The artist that featured are all great and add perfect verses but I came here for Dre not them. Another problem Is that on some of these tracks Dre sounds a little winded and not quite the same as he does on his other albums. As well I know for a fact Eazy had a ton of beef with Dre, so the Eazy shout outs kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I know towards the end of Eazy’s life they all went to apologize to him and ended it. But still he didn’t address ether of those things. Other than that It’s a fantastic album, the features were great and all on point with their verses. This whole album feels like a West Coast album and that’s that good Hip/hop.
